Being an interior designer means that you are always seeking out innovative inspiring elements to incorporate into designs. Sometimes a pattern or material will be enough to start the concept and the design magically builds upon that.
To celebrate the launch of Fameed Khalique’s showroom I was invited to check out the new home on the Kings Road equipped with bubbles of course. The impressive space has materials propped up on walls, hanging on displays and chests full of magical materials.
The collection of finishes are sourced throughout the world and offer the most intricate and fascinating materials that can be used in impressive ways to add detail and depth to an interior.
Embellished sequins and embroidery are made with couture standard and are simply stunning.
Metallic mesh in a variety of bright colours can be used for screens and wall panels.
I love this example of how the elements can be used; this beaded beauty is embellished onto a cushion to create an extravagant soft furnishing design.
Striking hard surfaces, like backlit onyx and agates are demonstrated throughout the showroom.
Mother of pearl in a variety of intricate patterns and tones.
3dimensional ceramic finishes that create an added depth with texture and geometric forms.
Resins with liquid metal layered and dyed in different shades.
There are drawers full of cracked gesso in numerous patterns.
Inside the drawers are stacks upon stacks of beaded beauties that must take a lifetime to create.
As you’ll notice the materials are extravagant and sparkling adding glitz to a space, take this black sequinned sample that is threaded in a way that makes is stand out in a raised form.
Or the gold sample next to it, which is actually leather that has had acid poured on top causing the leather to bubble and then coated with a metallic gold finish on top.
Feathers to add flamboyance to maybe a wall panel, it seems that designers are becoming more intoned with pushing the boundaries of design.
Something I found evident at the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibition, which was unbelievably inspiring and gave ideas on how materials can be incorporated in unique ways. Sadly, you are not able to take photos at the exhibition hence why I haven’t shared a post. But make sure you squeeze a visit in before it closes in August, you’ll be left utterly amazed and speechless.
Leather woven cushions stitched in remarkable weaves.
Lastly but not least we passed this incredible table in the Lapicida showroom.
Laura Bohinc is a jewellery designer who developed this design in stone. The Solaris Kinetic table was produced using four stacked rings of marble with brushed brass detail.
It was such an inspiring evening seeing so many innovative materials that I’ll be keen to incorporate into upcoming projects. Make sure to take a trip to Fameed Khalique’s have a nose in the drawers; you’ll end up leaving with a wish list of things you’ll want to use.
