So I imagine you’re thinking what is Backyard Cinema? Well the concept is a fun spin on the standard cinema experience. It is a contrast from the typical uncomfortable seats and stale snacks; the film screening is located in an unusual setting with tasty food and a night filled with surprises.
I went to the viewing of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ in the stunning Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green. Stepping inside from another rainy evening I was instantly fascinated by the baroque architecture as I walked into the marble entrance. The art-deco interior has a sweeping staircase lined with green and white marble.
The interior came as quite a surprise in the heart of London’s East End. The detail in the expensive deco style hotel can be seen even down to the patterned brass grills. The design is a mix of Edwardian, art deco and modern elements that has won many awards in the industry.
Before the film started we sat in the ante chamber, an intimate space, with vintage industrial furniture, large leather Chesterfield sofas and candles flickering in the room. We helped ourselves to a few drinks beforehand.
We went through to the Council Chamber where the screening took place. It is a spectacular space flooded with natural light, in which all the original features of the interior have been restored. The walls are clad in Australian walnut timber panels, the Chamber retains the original raised seating upholstered in green leather and fold down wooden desks.
After being directed to ‘the best seats’ we were greeted with our own cigarette girl who handed us chocolate ciggies and a selection of popcorn. We had caramel and white chocolate popcorn and the savoury option was goats’ cheese and pepper flavoured popcorn. Not really my type of thing, but an interesting combo to try.
Seated in 100-year-old leather and walnut seats, which were a little squeaky, we relaxed. I admired the interior in the Council Chamber the art deco architecture mixed with cutting edge design has an incredible impact.
Before the film began we chilled out sipping wine and tucked into a taster box that included; truffle tortilla balls, charred leek hearts with leek ash emulsion and iberico pork on a paella cracker.
Once we finished gobbling away the lights dimmed and I sank into my leather seat, occasionally admiring the chandeliers above.
It was an intimate setting with a comfortable atmosphere as people popped in and out to collect cocktails throughout the screening. I recommend looking for the next event, it was a really unique experience and the organisers have carefully combined, the snacks, surprises and setting to make a magical experience.
